President Trump Repeal of DACA

The decision by President Trump to “phase out” DACA is based purely on politics and not on human decency. It is heartless! Make no mistake that President Trump’s view of this, passed on by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, is flat out hypocrisy! Both Trump and Sessions know very well that Congress will NOT be able to pass immigration legislation in he next six months. The chances of this happening are as likely as Trump’s approval rating going above 50%. The last time Congress attempted a shot a immigration reform was in 2013 by the “gang of eight.” This proposed immigration bill crafted by 8 republican and democratic Senators would have given millions of undocumented immigrants a path for US citizenship. It passed the Senate and failed in the House. There is no chance of a similar bill passing Congress in the next 6 months. Trump and Sessions know this!

The reasons for phasing out DACA are categorically unsupported by the facts. Sessions says let’s enforce existing law by removing this program because it:

  • 1. Saves lives – there is not a single statistic showing that any of the 880,000 protected dreamers have committed serious felony offenses or harmed anyone. Pure fiction!
  • 2. Protects Communities – no data supporting this. In fact, I would love to see the education and work record of the 880,000 protected dreamers as well as their criminal records. Let’s be transparent President Trump!
  • 3. Protects taxpayers – this makes no sense. These dreamers are productive taxpaying folks. They aren’t skirting paying taxes. So how does this amount to harm?
  • 4. Prevents human suffering – this makes no sense whatsoever because if anything this action promotes human suffering. What could be more heartless and insufferable than forcing productive children illegally brought to the US “at no fault of their own” being forced to leave their families and return to a country they do NOT know!

In addition, this feigned excuse given by Trump and Sessions that the core reason for repealing DACA is because it is an “unconstitutional exercise by the executive branch (Obama) and shows disrespect for the legislative process” is beyond laughable. Since when does President Trump care about respecting the legislative process? Remember the Travel Ban months ago that he unilaterally invoked “without” consulting Congress! And now he has a change of heart to consult Congress and respect a process that he has repeatedly disrespected? This has nothing to do with enforcing laws and respecting the legislative process and everything to do with enhancing Trump’s political scorecard, massaging his ego, and patronizing his core supporters.
